MoMo Beijing – Sept. 26th – How to Monetize LBS

We’ve been talking about Location Based Service for quite a while. Since FourSquare made location check-in popular in 2009, LBS has attracted lots of attention in the mobile industry. Third party LBS providers develop game based location services to obtain more user engagement. Retailers also start to apply this technology to attract more customers. TopShop, the British fashion retailer targeting on young generation, recently works with SCVNGR, a location based gaming developer, to promote their goods when the new semester starts in September. Anyone within 500 meters distance to the retailer’s shops can play games on SCVNGR’s platform. Winners will obtain real world rewards with either discount or goods in the shop.

We tend to see more and more examples like this. How to monetize is always a question for all LBS developers. What is the value proposition of a location? When would a location be payable by clients? In February, MoMo Beijing has brainstormed new services/opportunities can be developed with location. This time, we will discuss how these services can generate value proposition to the users. We will have MoMo Boston & NYC organizer, and SkyHook, a location core engine provider, be with us. They will share successful cases with us in the global market scope. Meanwhile, we will also have local companies in the area of E-Commerce, Gaming, picture sharing, coupon, event organization, etc, to share with us their latest thoughts on LBS business models. We hope such communication can help local developers and international LBS companies have a better understanding of mutual market demands and position.

MoMo Beijing – July 25th – HTML5 Opportunities

Since its initial by WHATWG (Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group) in 2004, HTML5 has been well-known among web developers for years. However, it became the topic of mainstream media years later in 2010, after Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs stated his opinion that with the development of HTML5, Adobe Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content.

As a language for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web, HTML5’s core aims have been to improve the language with support for the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and devices. Although still under development, it has sparked a debate in web development circles where some suggested that while HTML5 provides enhanced functionalities, developers must consider the varying browser support of the different parts of the standard as well as other functionality differences between HTML5 and Flash.

In particular, HTML5 adds many new syntactical features, which are designed to make it easy to include and handle multimedia and graphical content on the web without having to resort to proprietary plugins and APIs. So what can we do with HTML5? Is it ready yet? How can we be inspired by the current players? In this Mobile Monday Beijing evening, we will invite experts from major players in this area and share their most up-to-date experiences. We wish to have a great brainstorm with you and explore the potential opportunities with HTML5.

Event will be held in both English and Chinese.

MoMo Beijing May 30th Technology – Design – Life

Neither design nor technology can be discussed alone. Both of them are aiming at delivering a better life. While technology is focused on fulfilling the functionalities of a product/service, design is more about how to present such functions. Nowadays, how to well combine technology and design has become a key to be successful. Apple is such an example. It created a loyal generation which is dedicated to what the brand is insisting: a fashionable and cool lifestyle.

Today, when more and more technologies are getting mature, what’s more? Augmented Reality, LBS, Brain Technology… To what extend can our life been changed by such technologies? And how to present these innovation in a more user friendly form? In this special event, we wish to have a deeper brainstorm with you for these questions.

Cooperated with Beijing Design Week, which will host from 28th September to 3rd October this year, with design topics covering nine industries ( http://www.bjdw.org/en/index.html ), this special MoMo Beijing event will focus on what technology and design can bring to our life. Three sections are included:

Sharing. We invite innovators from both design and mobile technology fields to share their experiences in product design and UX (User Interface, User Experience etc) design. We will also share view on how technolgy and design can change lifestyle which is something key to a succesful product.

Show. And where do you get inspirations? Improv and Music! Beijing Improv, a non-profit improv art organization founded 5 years ago, will bring us a stage show about technology, design and life. We will also have a secret band who will play us a nice song.

Interactive. Demo, Demo, Demo! Yes, you can experience it now! Never mind what technology is behind, just play with it!

MoMo Beijing March 28th Zero Distance MWC2011 & SXSW

We are delighted to invite you to join our March MoMo Beijing event: Zero Distance MWC2011 (Mobile World Congress 2011) & SXSW (South by South West).

The Mobile World Congress 2011, which held in Barcelona from February 14th to 17th, has proved itself a great success. According to GSMA, the congress has attracted more attendees, exhibitors, App developers, and CEOs delivering keynotes ever than before. Industry insighters from China Mobile, Google, QualComm, HTC, Twitter and other major players have expressed their views on the future development of the mobile industry. The App Planet once again became a hit for all audiences, of which over 200 exhibitions have attracted over 12,000 App developers. Hosted by British TV & radio star Jonathan Ross, the awarding session has granted the most successful apps during 2010. The ceremony included the presentation of nine categories of awards, including the first “Global Mobile Apps Awards”, introduced this year to celebrate the emerging trends in applications, as well as the “Mobile Innovation” category, which honoured achievements across vertical sectors such as health, education, finance, transport and utilities.

Just one month after MWC 2011, another major event, the SXSW Congress took place in Austin, Texas in the US. Starting from 11th March, it combines three major topics including music, movie and technology innovation and lasts until 20th.The event has become a launching pad for creative contents (music, film), and technology companies. Twitter, Foursquare and many other companies at their beginning phase used this platform to enlarge their visibility.

As most of the Chinese developers didn’t have a chance to attend these two congresses, we especially invite a few industry insighters who have been to MWC and SXSW, to share their experiences in the next MoMo Beijing event. The speakers will introduce their understandings of the congresses, and exchange opinions regarding the future trend of the mobile industry from different angles. We hope that, through such communication, local developers could have a closer understanding of the international market and deliver more innovation in the future.

**Due to the special purpose of this session, speeches will mostly be made in Chinese while PPTs will be in English. Chinese interpretation is provided for English presentation. We hope non-chinese speakers can still enjoy the session through PPTs and networking section.. :)

MoMo Beijing #38 New Years Edition LBS New Opportunities

Mobile Monday Beijing has the honor to invite you to our first event in 2011.

Since Foursquare started the LBS (Location Based Service) wave in March 2009, check-in and followed points/badges awarding have been the major attraction for users, which are also commonly called checkers. However, checkers get sluggish after spending a period of time repeating these actions. LBS providers have been seeking for new services to attract and retain their subscribers. Innovation and business opportunities for LBS will be shared during this topic.

For this session we will invite the most active LBS service providers in China as well as map and technology providers to show their most recent attempts and innovation in the market. As the sponsor of this session, NAVTEQ will introduce their most recent work in the LBS innovation scope. We will also have special guests from Deutsche Telecom and China Mobile Guangdong in this session.
