MoMo Detroit – Nov. 14th – The Impact of M2M

The growth of the M2M (machine-2-machine / mobile-2-machine) sector of the mobile technology industry is set to explode over the next 10 years according to a multitude of forecasters and analysts. The general consensus typically estimates that M2M device connections will grow from a rate of 62 million in 2010 to reach 60 billion by 2020.

While the availability of mobile technologies isn’t new, the recent proliferation of mobile devices into the hands of consumers, and their demand to utilize mobile technologies in both their personal and professional lives, is driving an increase in M2M deployments in an ever-increasing array of industries. The fastest-growing industry sectors are expected to be: utilities, healthcare and security, however the list of industries that can be positively impacted by M2M technologies is substantially longer.

In this meeting of Mobile Monday Detroit, we will explore the future of M2M technology on a global and national scale, as well as looking at its potential to positively impact Michigan specifically. Leading us in this exploration will be:

Linda Daichendt, Executive Director, Mobile Technology Association of Michigan who will define M2M technology, review current and anticipated uses of the technology, and discuss its potential specifically related to the State of Michigan.

Jason Campbell, Research Director, Market Strategies International who will share findings from a recent market opportunity study conducted by his firm with 1500 household decision-makers to measure consumer awareness, perceptions and adoption of M2M applications in five M2M areas that are already available or emerging in the marketplace. He will discuss what M2M solutions are likely to gain traction more quickly than others, and what types of benefits and barriers to adoption will need to be addressed to win consumers over.

Eric Spadafora, Director of Business Sales, Verizon Wireless who will demonstrate the value M2M is providing businesses across a variety of industries such as healthcare, finance and insurance, as well as the monumental impact M2M will have in the future, particularly with the advancements of 4G LTE. He will also discuss the resources that Verizon Wireless has put into place for business’ to leverage the potential of Mobile Technology and M2M, including the Verizon LTE Innovation Center, Verizon Application Innovation Center, Verizon Developer Community, and the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystems) Core, and how these investments from Verizon are helping customers increase revenue while reducing costs.

The meeting takes place at Automation Alley on Monday, November 14th at 5:30 p.m., and is free to attend though reservations are required due to space limitations.

MoMo Detroit – July 11th – Mobile Commerce / Mobile Banking

Forrester Research indicates that mobile commerce is expected to reach $10 billion by the end of 2012, and will experience annual compound growth at the rate of 39% over the next 5 years. Recent studies are filled with statistics that indicate significant growth in all areas of mobile commerce, such as:

  • 41% of smartphone owners have made a purchase from their mobile phone (Chadwick Martin Bailey)
  • 74 million consumers in the U.S. shop from their mobile devices (InMobi)
  • 13.1 million consumers access retail content via mobile phones with 8.2 million of them visiting mobile commerce websites (ComScore)
  • Again from Forrester, in the past six months, mCommerce has grown by 25%, faster than any other mobile channel
  • 10% of banking customers use mobile to check balances or transfer funds
  • Over 2 billion tickets were sold via mobile in the past year
  • Juniper Research analysts predict that mobile ticketing will reach 15 billion tickets delivered by 2014.

However, while the anticipated growth rate is substantial, the channel is not without its challenges, for example:

  • Retailers are still slow to embrace the technology as they deal with issues such as determination of ROI and identifying which devices to utilize
  • Statistics indicate that only 29% of retailers have a mobile strategy
  • Concerns about mobile security are still a big issue with consumers; a majority indicate they would use it if they could be certain their mobile number would be kept private

To bring SE Michigan into the conversation about mobile commerce, Mobile Monday Detroit is focusing its’ July 11th meeting on the topic of ‘Mobile Commerce / Mobile Banking’. Speakers for the event include: Thomas Emmanual Beals, President / Founder of MBO, Bryan Yohe, Data Sales Account Manager at Verizon Wireless and Jeff Alderman, Director of Online Marketing for North American Bancard.

Beals has over 20 years in the technology industry, with the last 9 years specifically focused on mobile. His firm, MBO, delivered the first barcoded ticket to a mobile device in 2006, and has since been featured in publications and news outlets worldwide including: ABC News, Business 2.0, Maxim Magazine and ZINK. Presently, he is focused on implementing mobile strategies that encompass SMS, barcoded tickets and coupons, mobile apps and Bluetooth kiosks. MBO’s growing list of clients includes: the Detroit Red Wings, Lucky Brand Jeans, Goodwill, Motown Recording Artist KEM, Fox Theatre, Sesame Street Live, and a variety of radio stations and non-profit organizations.

Beals presentation will focus on the evolution of mobile commerce thru the lenses of consumer behavior, infrastructure, device capabilities and services, as well as the opportunity that exists at the point at which those four critical components intersect and the best way to harness that opportunity.

Yohe’s position at Verizon Wireless entails assisting business customers in finding the right mobile applications and customized wireless solutions to help them meet various bottom-line objectives, such as increasing productivity and revenue, improving compliance and reducing costs. He is an 11 year veteran of Verizon.

Yohe’s presentation will provide a high-level view of the capabilities of M-commerce when machines are speaking to each other over a 4G LTE network, and will answer questions about the technology and the impact those capabilities will have on businesses, consumers and the wireless industry.

Alderman joined North American Bancard in 2009. He is responsible for all marketing aspects of the company including subsidiaries such as: Pay Anywhere, CDI Technology, and Capital for Merchants. Prior to joining NAB, Alderman spent eight years as Director of Online Marketing & Business Development for American Blinds, Wallpaper & More. In that role he built the ecommerce division, implemented major online marketing campaigns, and was directly responsible for the company’s market expansion. Through his efforts he propelled American Blinds into a top internet retailer and category leader.

Alderman’s presentation will focus on the shift toward ‘going mobile’ that is occurring in our everyday and business lives, where he indicates the payments industry is no exception to that shift, and that the latest industry news is focused on mobile payments and exploring what it means to the industry. He explains, “Nearly 75 million people in the U.S. own a smartphone (comScore) and in 2010, Americans charged $3.7 trillion to credit and debit cards (Nielson). Forrester reports that 50% of that commerce is going to be affected by the mobile phone as evidenced by the prevalence of mobile payment options in the App Store or Android Market.” To provide some perspective on what those numbers mean, Alderman will discuss:

  • The adoption of mobile payments by the payment industry
  • How payment processors, merchants, and customers are adjusting to mobile payments
  • How the industry intends to deal with the ever-blurring line between traditional and mobile payments

MoMo Detroit May 9th Mobile Technology and the Cloud

As more and more companies support more and more complex mobile scenarios, the need for a reliable and cost-effective back-end solution is paramount. Users expect access to personal and corporate data from whatever devices they choose to carry, blurring the traditional boundaries of corporate firewalls. Development timelines for mobile applications are usually measured in days or weeks, not months or years, so they need to provision resources quickly, and a successful mobile app may need to scale very rapidly as well.

With his presentation, ‘Mobile and The Cloud – A Perfect Match’, Microsoft’s Patrick Foley will explain how cloud technologies match these needs of mobile software development perfectly. The cloud is cheap, reliable, secure, ubiquitous, and easy to scale. His presentation gives an overview of what “the cloud” is, who the major players are, and how mobile developers can take advantage of cloud technologies today.

Patrick Foley is an ISV Architect Evangelist with Microsoft. His responsibilities include helping software companies, including mobile software companies, to build on top of the Microsoft platform, particularly in the areas of Windows Phone and Windows Azure.

Also presenting will be Jim Jakary, Senior Regional Sales Manager with Fiberlink Communications. Fiberlink designed, built, markets and maintains MaaS360, the only true cloud-based wireless solution for managing worldwide mobile devices and life cycle for smartphones, tablets, and laptop computers.

Jim’s presentation will focus on the realities of enterprise remote device management using a cloud-based utility solution. He will share mobile industry trends and best practices seen while working with Fortune 1000 companies, discuss core attributes that define cloud-based services for mobility, and provide insights to help attendees see and manage smartphones, tablets, and laptops that connect to corporate systems. Further, he will contrast SaaS offerings with “hosted” mobility solutions, and talk to key IT considerations for each delivery model regarding on-premise hardware and software, maintenance, updates, network configuration, licensing, and life-cycle.

ADDED BONUS PRESENTATION:

Long-time Compuware employee, John Kriegel, is very excited about the mobile technology interface with today’s vehicles. To share some of this interesting information John will present information about the Chevy Volt mobile application, including screen shots – then he’ll take us out outside to the Plaza in front of Compuware, and demonstrate the functions of the Volt and its’ mobile app in-person and answer any questions you may have!

Once again Mobile Monday Detroit will be meeting at the Compuware Building located at 1 Campus Martius in Detroit. And as always, we appreciate Compuware’s offer of their meeting facilities to host our event. We hope you will join us there!

MoMo Detroit Mobile in Health Care

Mobile healthcare, also known as mHealth, is one of the fastest growing segments of the mobile technology industry.  What exactly is mHealth? It is healthcare enabled by the use of mobile phones and other wireless devices, and it is a technology that is transforming healthcare from a physician and hospital-centric system to one that endeavors to connect all the entities involved in the healthcare process (including patients) via mobile in order to achieve the collection of community and clinical health data, delivery of healthcare information to practitioners, researchers, and patients, real-time monitoring of patient vital signs, and direct provision of care.

In a recent article, Justin Montgomery of MobileStorm states, “mHealth Technology has the ability to deliver a wide variety of healthcare services to people who previously had difficulty seeking, obtaining or following up on healthcare related matters.  Healthcare treatments have historically been defined by the patient traveling to see the practitioner, either a single time, or more often than not, on a repeated basis.  This provides a huge barrier to treatment for those who live in rural areas or don’t have access to reliable transportation.  mHealth Technology won’t take the place of every patient visit, but more often than not it can reduce the number of visits required while increasing the quality of the care provided.”

To speak to us about the opportunities and challenges facing the healthcare industry in the upcoming years, as well as the role that technology will play in the healthcare industry's transformation, will be Mr. Jason Joseph, Director of Technology and Information Solutions for Grand Rapids-based, Spectrum Health.  In his presentation, Mr. Joseph will provide an overview of the healthcare technology environment, as well as the identification of key opportunities and challenges that are present when considering mobile technology applications as healthcare solutions.  The presentation will highlight progress that Spectrum Health has made in leveraging mobile technology in business and clinical environments, potential uses for patients and providers, and the most promising uses of mobile technology within the industry in the next few years.

Mr. Joseph has 15 years experience consulting and leading technology organizations across several industries including healthcare, manufacturing, and utilities.  In his work for Spectrum Health, he is responsible for application development and integration, as well as revenue cycle applications.  While at Spectrum, Mr. Joseph has led the development of online and mobile solutions for patients, providers and employees, integrated core hospital clinical and financial information systems, and advanced the business intelligence capabilities of the organization.  He was instrumental in rolling out community health information exchange capabilities, and is active in developing a service-oriented architecture for healthcare that will provide enhanced capabilities for information exchange between organizations, providers and patients.  Prior to joining Spectrum Health in 2006, Mr. Joseph was the CIO for a mid-sized manufacturing organization and held various consulting positions specializing in enterprise software engineering and integration.

An additional speaker for this event is currently being finalized.  Additional details about that speaker and their presentation will be added as they become available.
