V21: Meet the New Generation Digital Business Models

Melbourne – Thursday 15 April 2010

The desire to realise our ideas and dreams is fundamental to human nature. The only limitation on turning those ideas and dreams into something concrete in the digital age in which we now live, is our imagination and creativity – provided that we’re prepared to leave some baggage behind.

The interactivity that technology now enables, its ability to deliver information “anywhere, anytime” on the target audiences’ “platform of choice”, our expectation as consumers to get “more for less” year on year and our need as business people to continue to make profits – challenges traditional business models and demands continual innovation.

We’re at a tipping point where business success belongs to the creative and agile who are prepared to re-invent and rejuvenate traditional business models in any industry, to identify and exploit niches, to live with the fact that “barriers to entry” will continue to be eroded, and to year on year find new ways to make themselves heard above the noise and move outside their comfort zones.

As we find new ways of understanding ourselves and our world and discover new forms of community we will build the new institutions and new businesses of the interactive age.

V21 2010 presents recent case studies of what worked and what didn’t and looks at the emerging opportunities in the travel, retail and entertainment industries.

With presentations from: ABC, Sitepoint, Red Bubble, Catalogue Central, Citrus, Perfumania, Onelove Music Group, Sound Alliance, FremantleMedia Enterprises and the AIIA .

$100,000 ‘App My State’ Special MoMoMelb Event – Monday Feb 15th, 6:00pm @ Horse Bazaar

Prizes worth $100,000 are up for grabs through the Victorian Government for app developers to do cool stuff with Victorian Government / public sector data through their ‘App My State’ initiative. As a mobile app developer your challenge, should you accept, is to create ways for residents, visitors, businesses and government to access and use this data in helpful ways. See the press release here.

The continued releasing of publicly-owned content such as these data sets is a big and innovative step by the Victorian Government. Of additional (and none-too-insignificant) interest is that the data is being released under a Creative Commons licence (which effectively means you’ll be able to use the data for your own means – as long as you adhere to the parameters laid-down). This is a move us MoMoers congratulate and we can all now watch the other Australian Governments play catch-up! More on that on the night…

So, *this* Monday arvo, the Mobile Monday Melbourne crew are pleased to welcome back Ian Stewart from the Office Premier of Victoria and introduce Luella Charles from DIIRD to discuss the ‘App My State’ initiative in more detail, explain how you could win your share of the $100,000 prizes and they’ll be seeking some advice from us about the best way for mobile apps to be registered into the comp. This initiative has yet to be formally launched, so it’s a bit of a MoMoMelb exclusive. We’re pleased to also host Founder and Editor of Anthill Online, the ever-debonair James Tuckerman to share some of his thoughts and help us ask clever questions.

Above and beyond that, come along and reacquaint with the MoMoMelb community. No doubt it’s going to be a huge year ahead.

Same bat time, same bat channel…

Monday Feb 15th
6.00pm for a 6.30pm (punctual) start
Horse Bazaar –  397 Lt.Lonsdale St, Melb

Lastly, and one for you to keep in mind, the crew of MoMoMelb welcome community-minded, digitally-aware and self-motivated individuals to join our inner-sanctum of nefarious activities and elephant hunting. In short, if you want to help us organise MoMoMelb and reckon you can add value, we want to hear from you. Interested? Contact Justin Brow at justin@60Sox.org.

Cheers,

The Mobile Monday Melbourne Team
Justin, Ben, Antony and (to a lesser, gestationally-dictated, extent) Emily

The Australian Mobile Phone Customer

Join us on Monday November 9th between 6.00pm and 8.00pm for a special look at the Australian Mobile Phone Customer – who they are, what they do and (drum roll, please) how they use their phones to transact.

2009 Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index

For the 5th year in a row, the crew from the AIMIA Mobile Industry Group have published the increasingly respected Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index. To provide an overview of the report (the first time we’ve had this opportunity in Melbourne), we are proud to host its co-author, Australia’s undisputed Grand Poobah of Mobile User Experience, and our colleague in the city with the big coat-hanger, co-organiser of MoMoSydney, Mr. Oliver Weidlich.

Oli will present some contemporary insights into ways Australians use their mobiles, how things are changing in the mobile landscape, the impact of smartphones and also a special look into mobile payments; the mobile wallet; micro payments; and the idea of a cashless, but mobile connected, society.

User Experience

To provide additional insight on consumer behaviour and user experience, we are equally as proud to welcome Dr. Rod Farmer, Senior Manager, Experience Strategy for Vodafone Hutchison Australia where he is responsible for leading the company’s User Experience strategy for all digital platforms and services.

vha11

Rod will speak to us about VHA’s existing user experience strategies, what has been learnt so far from the past and what directions they’ll be taking into the future (and why).

(Bios for both of our guests are below).

As always, we welcome as much audience interaction and dialogue as possible. We very much respect all of the opinions and insights our audience members may care to share. Our presentations are brief, to the point and informative. Our moderated Question and Answer session provides the opportunity for the Melbourne community to drill down on aspects of the Index Survey or User Experience topics that they choose – in audience with two of Australia’s leading proponents in the field.

As always, it’ll be a great night. We welcome you to join us.

Date: Monday November 9th

Time: 6.00pm for a 6.30pm (punctual) start – 8.00pm

Venue: Horse Bazaar – 397 Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne

NEXT EVENT: Monday 14th September – Location! Location! Location!

GPS has become near mandatory on new handsets and the new iPhone 3GS even has an inbuilt compass! The future of mobile is the Internet in your hand, but what if the Internet knew exactly where you were at any given time?

Knowing where you are and customising services and messages to your exact location is the dream of many marketers and application developers the world over. From being lost in New York at lunch time and finding that the best Falafel you’ve ever had is just down the road from you (Yelp) to knowing where your friends are at any given time just by pushing a butting (Google Latitude) LBS is pushing forward new boundaries and stretching the imagination. This month we invite big brand names and seasoned experts to our panel to discuss LBS or “Location Based Services”, some say the holy grail of mobile,

We will be asking our panel what is this the reality of LBS today? Where are we now and where will we be in 5 years time, how does LBS actually work and how can you integrate it into your services? We will explore the opportunities this incredible technology presents as well as the darker side of privacy concerns, covering who’s doing what, from iPhone apps to Smart Maps, and everything in between.

We welcome our LBS gurus for the evening:

Brent Stafford of Navteq

NAVTEQ LOGO
Brent is not stranger to LBS  and has worked worked in various technology and executive positions in the fields of car navigation, location based services, geographic information systems, hydrographic services, transport policy, business development, strategic planning, He has written and presented many papers to national and international audiences and parliamentary committees on these topics.

Navteq was acquired by Nokia in 2007 for $8.1 Billion Dollars to aid Nokia’s entry into navigation technologies on handsets. With Nokia being the largest manufacturer of GPS units in the world you cannot ignore the power of LBS in your hand. Navteq specialises in mapping the world around us, they don’t just focus on the maps but also on content for those maps providing highly detailed information on your surroundings.

Mark White of Locatrix

Mark is the founder & CEO of Locatrix Communications. A well-known mobile guy, he’s been a speaker at GSMA conferences in Barcelona and Macau, and has twenty years experience in the telecommunications and computer industries in a whole bunch of countries. Not a bad bloke to have a beer with

Locatrix uses mobile location to shape and create content experiences that engage subscribers and create higher ARPU for Telco’s. Locatrix is also a core contributor to the GSM Association’s OneAPI initiative, which is defining a standard way that network enablers (including location) can be opened to a much larger pool of web developers. “Mobile Entrepreneurs Go Gastronomic … “

They say the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, and perhaps the way to their stomach is through their mobile phone.

The August MoMo meeting kicks off with two Australian mobile entrepreneurs who have found their success in café reviews and city guides to reveal the best hidden bars and restaurants, not to mention the best places to shop.

Ross Hill

Ross Hill

Ross is a perfect career role model for the students of Entrepreneurs Week since he isn’t that long out of University himself at the youthful age of 22, already with a record of many business achievements and awards. In fact, it was a $10,000 award from RMIT’s annual Business Plan Competition while still at University that has and will continue to fund the next stage of his mobile startup, Yabble. The mobile and online site allows users to create, contribute and consider reviews of cafes, bars and restaurants around Australia while on the go. Ross will share some of his plans and opportunities for other like minded entrepreneurs on the night.

Michelle Matthews

Michelle_Matthews

Michelle and her Deck of Secrets are a must have if you like to eat, drink or shop!!! After developing her successful series of Australian dining, bar and shopping guides, Michelle decided to take her successful publishing series beyond the portable pages of a “deck of cards”. In 2008 Michelle collaborated with iPhone Developer Shaun Ervine to create the Deck of Secrets iPhone application, recently featured in Apple’s TV commercials worldwide, and now offering ten downloadable apps in the iTunes store. Michelle may even have some give aways for our audience on the night!
