Meet some OviStore application developers, a Nokia showcase in Nairobi

The team at Nokia is really committed at promoting local talent. At a previous event when they were announcing the results from the Nokia Innovation Competition, they were challenged to at least mention the some of the Kenyan developers who made it to the top 20. This they did and went a step further. After looking through the top 20 list, they selected two young developers with whom they worked with to refine their service and even offered marketing support. AfroHot or Not and Wazzup were taken to market with good results. AfroHot has a user-base of 6,000 across East and Central Africa. Word is…more cool stuff is coming from the various collaborations Nokia is spearheading with local developers. Watch this space. ………………………………………………………………….. …………………………………………………………………..

4th Mobile Monday Meetup

We had our 4th MoMo meet up at the IHub on the 26th of July. The meet up was moderated by our favorite group of techie ladies, Akira Chix. Kicking of the meet up was Linda Kamau (twitter @lkamau) of Ushahidi, who walked us through the new Ushahidi Android application, interestingly the core developer of the app Henry Addo was present at the iHub though he didn’t chime in. I had the pleasure of chatting with him for a few minutes and picking is brain. David Mark of the IAVI (International Aids Vaccine Initiative) also gave us a very interesting look into how SMS has been used by the IAVI to monitor sex workers. RapidSMS is the platform being used by IAVI and if you ever want to know some of the interesting lessons about deploying and managing an SMS solution David is the person to talk to. When all this was happening, Jessica and I decided to compare our HTC devices, the geek and techie in us couldn’t help it. Big thanks to iHub for providing the venue and Akira Chix for doing an excellent job at moderating the event.
