MoMo NYC – Mobile Commerce Event Recap

Thanks to everyone who attended our mobile commerce event last Monday. Apologies to most of you - who we had to turn away once all the passes were quickly claimed.

Our panel represented 4 key segments of the mobile commerce ecosystem. It was moderated by someone who’s been helping drive ecosystem innovation since before most of us started dreaming about the revolution sparked when mobile tech entered the realm of bricks-and-mortar commerce.

Participating in the discussion:

  • Spencer Spinnell (Director of Emerging Platforms, Google / Google Wallet)
  • Jacob Styburski (Director of Product Management, American Express / Serve)
  • Jonty Kelt (CEO, Group Commerce)
  • Mike Brody (Co-founder, Payfone)
  • Mike Garelik - moderator (Continuous Commerce)

Here’s my attempt to extract a few salient points from the evening:

  • Mobile Monday New York members are (really) excited about Google Wallet - what it means for the industry and about being able to give it a try.
  • If you’re a developer and want to get involved in mobile commerce, think about the gaps you could bridge. Jonty from Group Commerce said, on average, consumer mobile visits to his deals network are 4x longer, but mobile conversion percentages are significantly lower than desktop.
  • While at Citigroup, Mike Garelik built my personal favorite early market trial - with the MTA / NYC subway! Mike’s knowledge of  - and often involvement with - key implementations and players knit our diverse panel together for energetic conversation and spirited debate.
  • Mike Brody thinks carrier-billed payments (including those enabled by Payfone) will be big in the US, and even more important in markets where consumer banking and credit are less pervasive.
  • At the same time as it innovates, seemingly much quicker than competitors, American Express maintains a clear and strong commitment to security. In other markets, seemingly heavy-handed security policies can be a barrier to innovation. In mobile commerce, it’s an enabler.

Thanks to our sponsors - Google Wallet, Payfone, Group Commerce, and Blue Point Brewing - for hosting the event and providing the food and drink.

MoMo NYC – Sept. 26 – Mobile Commerce at Google

We’re kicking off Mobile Monday New York’s fall season with a great September event.

It seems to me like pundits and prognosticators have been telling us of the coming age of mobile commerce forever. Services that let us whip out our mobiles to buy candy from the drugstore, hop a cab ride, or grab coffee from the street cart have been in trials for years, but haven’t been available to the masses.

Finally, it feels like that’s about to change. Over the last few months, big players have been rumbling about big plans with real technology, huge partnerships, and commitments to distribution.

Join us Monday, September 26th for an evening hosted at Google NYC where leaders from established firms and innovative startups in the commerce space will come together for a panel. We’ll discuss the pieces that are quickly coming together to create a mobile commerce ecosystem that seems poised to change the face of local buying and selling.

What: Panel discussion, followed by networking and drinks
When: Monday, September 26 at 7:00pm
Where: Google NYC, enter at 76 Ninth Avenue (near 16th Street) in Manhattan
Cost: Free, but Registration is required

Details on the agenda and participants will be provided soon. We are still accepting sponsorship proposals for this event, and for MoMo NY’s 2012 annual supporter program.

Got mobile cred and want pitch your tech?

Are you tired of pitch events where *maybe* 1 out of the 10 companies get a follow up investment meeting and the rest of you get a hot steaming cup of jack squat?  You spend all sorts of time on it and it doesn’t help you build your business at all.

What if you could pitch a potential client—one that doesn’t have some limited amount of capital they’re trying to preserve—but one that needs help and could use a variety of services, including yours?  Yes!  Revenues!  Why bother with getting investors if you could get cash money in the door?!

NextNY is continuing its series where big companies telegraph their needs to the startup community and you get a chance to win their business.  Could it be an ad deal?  A distribution agreement? A six figure revenue windfall?  It’s up to you to sell them on what you’ve got that suits their needs.

The last NextNY event produced not only a deal with the New York Daily News but a pivot and a new business model for Olapic. (www.olapic.com).

Barcode Event Recap

Angie Schottmuller our moderator provided the following personal recap of the our recent barcode event:

Panel Insights

  • There’s a growing demand and hunger for knowledge on the topic.
  • The competition of barcode format/platform differences is somewhat appreciated for technology advancements, but shunned for confusion to consumers.
  • There are underlying ISO standards and telecommunication factors impacting mobile barcodes that can quickly confuse and overwhelm marketers.
  • There’s consensus that marketers need to provide contextual assistance beside codes. (i.e. get a reader app, “scan to ____”, back-up alternatives like SMS or links, etc.)
  • The complexity of testing barcode scannability is growing. (i.e. more readers / mobile devices / barcode types, etc.)
  • Most industry experts see NFC and 2D barcodes as potential partners/sisters, not replacements, in the mobile channel.
  • Industry experts don’t fully agree on best practices or the future of mobile barcodes. (Most differences surface between providers/platforms and UX/marketing specialists.)
  • Although designer mobile barcodes are possible, marketers need to verify if design is necessary and test to ensure design isn’t hindering scan conversion.
  • There’s an increasing need for large players and marketers in the industry to lead by example on best practices.

Post-Panel Discussion Insights

  • Many tech-savvy folks are quick to use mobile barcodes without considering purpose or value-add for the user. (This trend seems to align with the fact that most developers also aren’t in tune with UX design.)
  • Most folks haven’t done testing of codes to ensure scannability.
  • Many attendees claimed awareness of mobile barcodes, but still were uncertain of how to effectively use them.
Conclusion

We have a lot of work to do to educate each other, marketers and consumers.

Monday, June 13th - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Pivotal Labs - 841 Broadway, 8th floor (between 13th & 14th Streets)

Fresh from the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), App Orchard, Tipping Point’s latest portfolio company, invites you to an Internet Week panel here in New York to discuss the state of Enterprise iOS. Please join us Monday, June 13th at 6:30pm, for an evening with some of New York’s leading mobile technologists and experts on iOS in the Enterprise, including Vivek Nasta, Global Head of Mobility at Thomson Reuters; Rob Mee, Founder and CEO of Pivotal Labs; Chuck Goldman, Founder and CSO of Apperian; and Scott Penberthy; moderated by Art Chang.

We will explore topics ranging from WWDC’s Enterprise-specific announcements to common best practices and notes from the trenches of mobile iOS development, beginning with the focal question:

Enterprise iOS - what works, what doesn’t work, and why?

We will also explore the following: What are companies’ greatest challenges and barriers to entry?  How are developers integrating iOS to legacy systems?  What are the biggest integration issues?  Security issues?  What’s still missing for more IT adoption?  The panel will conclude with several forward-looking questions:  How can we take our shared goals and beliefs to define best practices and identify missing frameworks that will lead to greater success in this area, and how can the open-source community raise awareness about some of these projects?

Attendance is by RSVP only; please register here as soon as possible, as space will be limited: http://apporchardpanel.eventbrite.com
