MoMo Vienna #11 – Usability and Design Thinking

Our next MoMo on June 27th will be all about usability and User Experience in the mobile world. We will have three awesome keynotes:

  • Learn how great user experience drives business success from Usecon (Peter Strassl)
  • Gain insight on a how mobile products need to be designed to reach an elderly target group from Emporia. You will be surprised that there is a lot more than just big letters on a display ;-)
  • Microsoft Austria will allow us a glimpse into the future of user experience with Kinect (Andreas Schabus Microsoft Austria)

At the same time while our keynotes are held at NHM, two fantastic experts that we are flying in from Germany, Ahmet Emre Acar and Werner Alexander Jansen, will hold a workshop at TU Wien for a group of 20 MoMo people to the process of “Design Thinking”: A method from Silicon Valley that teaches to balance analytical and intuitive thinking – the rational and the emotional – for the solution and prototyping process when creating products.

The results of that workshop will be shown to the MoMo audience briefly at the end of this MobileMonday session.

We gladly welcome Verena Krawarik, responsible for Innovationsmanagement @ APA, as our host of the evening.

7×7: 7 mobile marketing concepts and 7 minutes of fame

For the second time MoMo meets University and FHWien showcased mobile marketing ideas last Monday May 16th for companies like Nestlé Schöller, Volvo, Die Presse, Palmers, Herold, Nokia and Wirtschaftsblatt. Marketing experts of all named companies attended this special MoMo event to give feedback to the students.

Each team had seven minutes only to present their project report.

Speaker & Slides

Students of FH Wien – Course “Mobile Marketing”

First peep, then buy: The mobile Palmers “Strandkabine”

Team Palmers presented their concept of “Strandkabine”, a changing cabine where handsome boys and good looking girls wearing a piece of the new Palmers collection could be watched through a virtual peephole. The concept of the hybrid app also included hybrid a style-guide and a mobile loyalty card, which directly linked to the Palmers online store. Gudrun Liska from Palmers was enthusiastic about the diea: “Palmers customer do not want complicated concepts, they want simple, funny and stylish apps. That’s why I really really like the concept.”

What do ice cream and QR Codes have in common?

The winner of the evening, chosen via SMS voting, was Team “Nestlé Schöller”: They drafted a scavenger hunt for QR codes. Hunters who find the hidden QR Code first, get points for the first check-in by scanning the code and on top they would receive additional points if other users scans the same code afterwards. In the end, Schoeller QR codes should be seen all over the city. Concept “Stanitzeljagd” also offers a mobile treasure map, and social media links with facebook. The winners received goodie bags from “DiePresse”.

3 minutes of fame with a Nokia E7

“3 minutes of fame” are offered to Nokia E7 users who party at DOC LX events: Have a say in the music being played if you get in touch with the DJ at the DOC LX party with your Nokia E7 and its music selector app. Social media features help with flirting as well.

MoMo Vienna #10: Web vs. App. And the winner is…

There is hardly another topic that pays more attention in the mobile area than the battle between native app and mobile browser. For that reason together with you we will take up the fight on the next MoMo.

All we need is …

According to asymco.com more than 60 Apps have been downloaded for every iOS device sold. In other words the iTunes App Store is about to reach 10 billion downloads. A good reason for companies to invest their money in app development. BUT on the other hand comscore.com pointed out that three out of four mobile user favor the browser for product information or blogging as well as news, videos or local information like wetter. So - who will win the fight?

The battle

We invite you to take part in an exciting “battle” with our guest speakers: Together and against each other we will discuss topics like:
  • When to use an app or a mobile website?
  • What are the advantages or disadvantages of each medium?
  • Which are the main points a company should keep in mind to take the right decisions?
Be our referee and visit the MoMo#10 “Apps vs. Browser. And the winner is…” on 21st March 2011

MoMo Vienna – Indoo.rs: Students win MobileMonday Demo Night 2010!

10 demos rocked the house at tonight’s MobileMonday, but there was only one winner: Indoo.rs received two C7 devices from main sponsor Nokia and will be nominated for MobilePremierAwards (MPA 2011) in Barcelona. You will never get lost at the airport again or search for vinegar in the aisle of a huge supermarket: Indoo.rs enables location based services indoors, right there where GPS fails (GPS only works outdoors). The winners, Markus Krainz and Bernd Gruber, are students and 22 years old.
Claudia Poepperl from ADAFFIX was one of last years demo night winners and she knows: „Awards are very important for start ups. Being in Barcelona was great, we won Mobile Premier Awards and on top of that also GSMA Global Mobile Award 2010. MobileMonday Austria helped us with its great network and PR.“

APP MARKETING OVERRATED?

ADAFFIX is a very young company, it has been founded in 2009. So what is it, that helped them becoming so successful in such a short time? Was it good App Marketing? „Of course you can go and buy downloads.“, says Claudia, „But we learned that ad-conversion rates are not that good and bought downloads tend to be expensive. In our case good cooparations and partnerships were key to success.“ Read more about Claudia’s way to success in an exclusive interview with MobileMonday Austria:

MobileMonday brings back the legendary demo night and will show 10 live demos of great mobile services on November 15th in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna.

MoMo Vienna – #8 – mPayment

Mobile payment will grow more than 50 percent compared to the year before, predicts Gartner in a recent study. But mPayment is not just a phenomenon known from developing countries, it's common practice here as well: Think of smartphone users who download and pay for apps via the mobile channel already.

But still: Would they order a book on the mobile phone as well? Or would they want to use their phones to pay on the web if there is no credit card handy? Is he app user also willing to complete a purchase while he is using a mobile application? According to Gartner this is going to be reality for 108.6 Million people or 2.1 percent of all cellphone users worldwide.

On September 20th at 7pm MobileMonday Austria will showcase in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna how mPayment is already being used and where the gold might be buried for (online) merchants in the very near future. After exciting show cases and a great discussion we will enjoy networking with drinks and snacks.

Speakers will be announced soon! Stay tuned!

#7 – (Mobile) Media Revolution

The response of Austria’s media to the upcoming (mobile) media revolution. As the media world is finally coming out of the stone age things are beginning to become exciting and can lead to uncertainty, but one thing is for certain: old media (business models) must die.

The money is on the table

The vast majority of more than 160 attendees at MobileMonday's "Mobile Media Revolution" event would actually pay for quality content on the digital channel. That is the surprising result of an informal survey conducted at our most recent MobileMonday on June 21 in the Museum of Natural History in Vienna. Why many media companies do not yet understand that there is money to be made, was one of the key "take-aways" gleaned from a high-profile panel of media experts.

13 Percent willing to pay

Between three to four percent of readers who regularly consume digital news content have paid for it in the past. Moreover, it has been projected that 11 to 13 percent of digital news content readers would be willing to pay for it in the future, said Andreas Hladky, Senior Consultant at Point of Origin. Hladky cited a study conducted by Forrester Research and highlighted that the problem is not that consumers are unwilling to pay for content. "It is rather the media companies and publishers who believe that through the introduction of tablets (like the iPad / WeTab) consumers will suddenly start to pay for content which was normally free on the Web. Therefore, the primary task for media companies," according to Hladky, "is to produce fresh, attractive news content delivered through innovative media formats and sustainable business models."

The search for new models: Can Google help?

With regards to searching for new business models, Helmut Hoffer von Ankershoffen, CEO of neofonie, compared current media with the music industry: "Just because I buy a newspaper, it does not mean I'm going to read the entire newspaper. On the contrary, very often i am only interested in one or two articles.  Therefore, readers should be able to buy single articles the same way they buy individual tracks of music. This offers opportunities for intelligent rebundling offers." He suggested that Google is already working on a similar concept business model.

50.000 Tablets per year in Austria expected

This comparison with the music industry did not convince Peter Krotky, Managing Director and Chief Editor of DiePresse.com:  "A music product can be used for 30 years, a news article is usually no longer interesting the next day".  Another possible model that has been discussed that evening is subscription which works out well in traditional media, but also advertising might be a source of revenue if attractive reach can be generated. In regards to potential reach, Peter Krotky shared of conversations with mobile experts who project that about 50,000 tablet devices will be sold in Austria each year.

What do ego-trippin' users want?

"Users are not interested in how media companies will make money" was a feedback on the Twitter Wall. Everyone came to the conclusion that the way media companies make their money is really not the problem of the reader. "What the consumer is really interested in are lean solutions," said Hladky from point of origin. Sleek and simple solutions that will deliver exactly the right information to the user and the right time, and not when someone else - for example a journalist - determines the consumer should read the information. "It is not a technological revolution that we face here, but a human one." declared Dr. Martin Zimper, a professor at The ZHDK (University of Arts and Design in Zurich):  "We are starting to live a human-machine relationship."  Moreover, Hladky refers to this revolution as a move towards the "ego-trippin' user" which is demonstrated in mobile apps. Apps already apply a "lean principle" of development and are extremely user centric.

End of stone age: Old media must die

So, is the time when journalists delivered preselected content to their readers over? The answer is "Yes," according to Helmut Hoffer von Ankershoffer who has helped bring the "WeTab" (an iPad competitor) to market. "This task cannot be fulfilled by journalists anymore, the only one who really understands what is relevant for me," according to Helmut, "is myself. " The days are gone when the chief editor chooses what is relevant. Quality journalism should be working more with social media, and delivering content through personalized searches conducted by the consumers themselves." Mesi Tötschinger (Editor in Chief of news.at and Xpress ) sees things differently: "The stone age has not ended because we were running out of stones. There will still be a need for good quality journalism, but we need to find out what content we can distribute and through which channels." As the media world is finally coming out of the stone age things are beginning to become exciting and can lead to uncertainty, but one thing is for certain: old media (business models) must die.
