MoMo Germany 2008 Summit - by Russell Buckley
By Oliver Lauer, On 12/4/07 10:03 PM
MoMo Germany 2008 Summit
150 movers and shakers from the German world of mobile gathered in Frankfurt yesterday to learn, exchange ideas, network furiously and celebrate our first year of German Mobile Mondays. It's been a great year too, with 4 City Chapters now thriving and our sponsorship model being widely admired within the MoMo community.
We had a packed programme, despite some people pulling out at last minute, which is always very disappointing for both the organisers and the attendees. But we were still able to provide a great line-up of interesting and compelling speakers - and the people who failed to attend weren't missed.
Many thanks to all the sponsors who included Peperonity (thanks for the Glühwein Reception, guys!), HiWave, RMV and Netbiscuits, as well as the national sponsors, Sun Microsystems, Nokia and Deutsche Post.
Our crammed agenda, where speakers were challenged to gaze into the future of the mobile industry, included:
Qualcomm, Bernhard von Canstein: "What's next for Mobile Media & TV? Powerful Lessons from the MediaFlo Ecosystem in the US"
Bernard gave a convincing presentation about why Mobile TV would eventually prevail and the lessons they've learned so far.
Netbiscuits, Michael Neidhöfer: "Bring real Internet Experiences to Mobile Users: Usability as driver for traffic on mobile websites with examples from eBay, Bild, Spiegel and kicker"
Michael believes that the mobile web is more than boring old wap. Netbiscuits deliver a PC-quality experience today and showed us just what's possible right now, using case studies from real clients and what they're doing on the mobile web.
T-Online, Anja Thies: "2008 - The Year of Context and Convergence at T-Online mobil"
Anja challenged us to "Think Big" and discussed T-Online's learnings so far. Intriguingly, this included "Mobile users want to find, not search". That's not such good news for some!
Session 2 - FOOD FOR THOUGHT
MobHappy, Russell Buckley: "MobHappy.com's Prediction for the New Year"
Russell gave us 10 predictions for the year ahead. Make a note and see if this leading blog is right - he claimed an 8 out of 10 success rate in the last 4 years. Russell's main theme was a call to German operators to liberate the mobile web for their customers by introducing competitively price data tariffs.
CScout, Philippe Souidi: "Hardware & Device Trends: What New Opportunities will Open Up?"
Phillippe focused on Japan, so often the source of what happens here tomorrow. The highlight included a ring you wear on your finger - you then stick your finger in your ear to make a call. It's been a prototype forever, so it's great that it's finally come to market.
chilli mind, Oliver Gerstheimer: "Mobile Urban Internet"
Oliver's presentation was one of the most challenging of the event, forcing the audience to think hard about the future of mobile and questioning some of the accepted wisdom of the industry. For instance, the money is going to be made from mobile usage in the home, not by bored commuters killing time. Social networks meets user-centered design meets urban life of tomorrow. Wow.
Session 3 - PLATFORM & APPLICATIONS TRENDS
T-Mobile, Enrico Menge: "iPhone powered by T-Mobile"
Enrico is passionate about the iPhone and tells us why it's great for T-Mobile now - and why it will be great for T-Mobile and its customers in the future. He also hinted that iPhone users would be the first to benefit from some aggressive new flat rate data tariffs in Germany!
SUN Microsystems, James Gosling: "Java Everywhere"
Legend, veteran evangelist and charismatic speaker, James Gosling, relished the chance to put the ball back into the audience's court in his remarkably frank Q&A. You had to have been there, but Apple and Google both seem pretty challenging to deal with and aren't likely to be getting any easier soon.
Cellity, Sarik Weber: "Enabling Cellity on the iPhone"
Cellity is a free mobile applications that allows you to make low cost calls on any mobile on any network. Users can save up to 90% of the cost of calls. What are you waiting for?
trutap, David Whitewood "Confessions of a Mobile Entrepreneur"
trutap is also a downloadable application offering users next-gen features from IM to blogging, from online chat to social networking. David shared some memorable insights into his experiences as a mobile entrepreneur, including the importance of understanding your consumers, keeping an eye on costs and focusing on a goal - the nice boat he hopes to buy in a few years when he's conquered the mobile world.
Hiwave, Laurenz Lenkewitz: "Bluetooth Marketing: Pros and Cons of Pull and Push"
Laurenz gave a very considered and thoughtful speech discussing the pros and cons of using Bluetooth as a marketing medium. He freely admitted some of the issues (such as accusations of spam) and proposed some good work-arounds and alternative approaches.
A very fine turn out of speakers and audience, most of whom enjoyed a very nice (free) buffet and further networking late into the night.
See you next year.
