Mobile Navigation and Location Services
The past years have seen the market of navigation devices expand at an increasing rate. Stand alone navigation devices are now sold in millions in Germany.
The mobile phone may also be used as a navigation device: Connected to a GPS mouse via bluetooth the phone receives wirelessly navigational information from a server. Already today, it offers distinct advantages over stand alone solutions: Maps and thus routing information are more up to date, the user might have access to destinations via his contact list, further services can be added on top easily since integration takes place on the server side.
In 2007 three trends will enable the mobile phone to truly compete with stand alone devices: Data tariffs reach an acceptable price level, GPS boards the mobile phone plus storage and processor power of new mobile phones allow for hybrid solutions (maps on the phone) and 3D display. Nokia and Motorola are paving the way. Both companies are pushing hard to position themselves in this market - thus raising public awareness.
Another trend makes this industry interesting to those of you working in the content and mobile service or marketing business: This year navigation and location service providers are mounting new content on top of their services : They are keen on differentiating their services not only by integrating points of interest but by including any type of promising content, e.g. mobile marketing, real estate and dating - just to name a few.
