Launches a migration program Sybase iAnywhere goes after Intellisync market

12 Oct 2008 at 05:06 GMT Sybase’s mobile subsidiary iAnywhere this week launched its new Nokia Intellisync Migration Program. The program is aimed at supporting Nokia Intellisync partners and customers affected by Nokia’s decision to stop the development and marketing of its behind-the-firewall business mobility solutions.

The company is offering Nokia Intellisync customers free copies of selected Information Anywhere Suite components, including mobile email, device management, device security and application enablement capabilities.

FunMobility launches audio application Make your own ringtones for iPhone

12 Oct 2008 at 05:05 GMT FunMobility, a provider of wireless community and media services, Thursday announced the launch of YouTones, the first user-generated ringtone application that is currently available for download on the iPhone.

The application, already available on many popular handsets and across carriers such as Alltel, AT&T, Metro PCS and Verizon Wireless, gives users the power to easily create custom ringtones or audio messages by combining their own voices with a sophisticated audio mixing engine that lets them add special sound effects.

Berg Insight says predicts 70 million handset navigators in 2014

12 Oct 2008 at 04:55 GMT The number of mobile subscribers downloading navigation routes using their mobile handsets is expected to grow from 16 million users in 2008 at a compound annual growth rate of 28 percent to reach 70 million users in 2014, according to a new research report by Berg Insight.

Revenues from subscriptions and advertisements are expected to reach EUR 597 million by 2014 from EUR 177 million in 2008, a CAGR of 22.4 percent.

Allows real-time billing for messaging and information services TCS gets a patent for message debit solution

09 Oct 2008 at 04:20 GMT TeleCommunication Systems, a provider of wireless communications solutions, Wednesday announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,428,510 for "Prepaid Short Messaging."

This TCS invention allows a mobile operator to provide messaging and information services to its prepaid subscribers using a method that prevents fraud and revenue loss. The invention determines if a subscriber has sufficient funds in their account to receive a short message and either delivers the message or prevents delivery of the message based on the account balance.

Nokia licenses predictive text also from Nuance Nokia hears nuances in speech

09 Oct 2008 at 04:06 GMT Nuance Communications and Nokia announced Wednesday a multi-year licensing agreement on predictive text and speech recognition. In August Nokia signed multi-year contract for Zi Corporation’s predictive eZiType and eZiText products.

Nokia and Nuance say in their press release that the agreement also establishes a strategic collaboration to advance an open integration framework for advanced input technologies that will foster innovation in the broader mobile developer ecosystem.

5 meter wind mill blades Ericsson unveils wind-powered base station

Working with Vertical Wind AB and Uppsala University in Sweden, Ericsson is developing the concept as part of its effort towards sustainable and cost-efficient solutions that help bring communications to all.

Russwurm in, Montes out Siemens changes its representative on NSN BoD

07 Oct 2008 at 16:33 GMT Eduardo Montes, 57, executive advisor to the CEO of Siemens AG will resign from the Board of Directors of Nokia Siemens Networks B.V. effective as of October 2008, NSN announced Tuesday. He will be succeeded by Siegfried Russwurm, 45, Member of the Siemens Managing Board and Head of Corporate Human Resources.

Within the Siemens Managing Board, Russwurm has regional responsibility for Europe, CIS and Africa which are key regions for Nokia Siemens Networks.

Next-generation notebooks and netbooks LG takes HSPA from Ericsson

03 Oct 2008 at 14:46 GMT LG Electronics has selected Ericsson to provide mobile broadband modules based on HSPA technology. LG notebooks and netbooks will include mobile broadband modules from Ericsson in Q3 2008.

HSPA provides a DSL-like experience wirelessly with true mobility and there are currently more than 207 commercially deployed HSPA networks globally, serving more than one billion subscribers.

Sharing network with 3G UK T-Mobile to turn off 5,000 basestations in UK

03 Oct 2008 at 14:34 GMT UK mobile operator, T-Mobile is planning a shut-down of some 5,000 of its base stations as part of its network sharing deal with Hutchison 3G UK, reports UK trade magazine, Mobile Today. The publication said that both networks are removing transmitters as they begin to share resources.

SDK and tools available for software developers Nokia reveal S60 5th Edition with touch

03 Oct 2008 at 14:25 GMT Nokia Thursday introduced the S60 5th Edition, the latest release of the S60 smartphone platform. With the latest edition the user interface is extended by the introduction of touch and with full support for tactile feedback.

Enhanced display resolution support and a new widescreen mode. Also, for the first time, the platform includes a framework for the use of advanced sensor technology. This all allows S60 device manufacturers to create innovative new device concepts for a wider range of user segments, while preserving the rich capabilities of the existing software platform.
