Small companies active 330,000 dotMobi names registered

DotMobi, the official worldwide registry for the .mobi domain, gained 330,000 name registrations by the end of the year. Since October numerous companies have set up their own mobile optimised .mobi sites.

dotMobi – the informal name of mobile Top Level Domain Ltd – is the global registry for the .mobi top level domain.

The dotMobi Site Showcase provides consumers with a sampling of .mobi sites at http://showcase.mtld.mobi.

“In the short time that .mobi names have been available to the public, we have been pleasantly surprised by the number of sites going live,” said Neil Edwards, CEO of dotMobi.

“We expected that large companies would see the benefit in building a .mobi site to provide their customers with a great mobile experience, and we’re confident we will continue to see more .mobi sites from major organizations in 2007. What was somewhat unexpected – and great to see – is the high-quality content that has been developed by smaller, niche sites utilizing the .mobi domain as a tool for building a presence and providing information and services to mobile users.”

DotMobi announces that content developers and .mobi domain owners have an opportunity to showcase their sites at the first-ever Webby Mobile Awards, which recognize the growth and quality of content being developed for mobile devices. These awards will be presented at the 11th Annual Webby Awards in June 2007. Sites built on .mobi’s open standards can be submitted for consideration in three categories: Listings & Updates, News & Entertainment and Mobile Marketplace (for sites selling products and services). Mobile sites can be submitted until January 26, 2007.
