AOL ties up with Aether
America Online said Tuesday that it is foraying into wireless services for small and medium-sized businesses through an alliance with Aether Systems, a wireless data products and service provider.
Under the deal, Aether Systems will tie AOL e-mail, instant messaging and content to its products and services, allowing small business users to check their mail, communicate with co-workers and clients and keep up to date on business news while on the go. Additionally, users of AOL's Netbusiness service will be able to access their customized information, communication and productivity tools via wireless platforms such as cell phones and personal digital assistants through Aether's Fusion technology. In return, Aether will be able to tout its wares across AOL parent company AOL Time Warner Inc.'s broad range of media holdings.
In addition to reaching a joint marketing and development agreement, AOL is also making a minority investment in Aether, the company said.
