Ericsson prospers with by managing deals H3G Italy hires a caretaker for its UMTS network

H3G in Italy has signed up Ericsson to manage its UMTS network. The “exclusive managed services” contract will give Ericsson full responsibility for the management and development of the 3 Italy’s infrastructure which was supplied by several vendors. According to Ericsson, the deal calls for it to take charge of the provision of multimedia services and business support systems throughout Italy. H3G sees this as the best way of optimizing its assets while freeing it to concentrate on winning subscribers and launching new services. The agreement marks the latest in a series of such network management contracts signed by Ericsson and other equipment vendors as operators struggle to reduce the costs of owning, running and developing large national networks. Included in the deal is the transfer of 750 staff from the Italian operator to Ericsson in Italy. The vendor is due to assume responsibility for H3G’s network during the second quarter of 2005.
