AdMob's August report iPhone takes 40 percent of mobile browser market

The Apple iPhone and iPod touch web browser has increased its mobile browser market share to 40 percent from 33 percent, overtaking Symbian, according to AdMob's August Mobile Metrics Report. In the U.S. alone, the Apple devices account for 52 percent of mobile browser use.

The AdMob Mobile Metrics report is a reflection of the data flowing through our network each month.

Also Android continues to gain share at the expense of the legacy platforms like Symbian and Windows Mobile as you see from the AdMob graphics: .

Although its share of usage has been declining, Nokia handsets still dominate the top smartphones lists in all regions outside North America. Nokia’s new touchscreen devices – the N97 and XpressMusic – are both gaining traction and were the number 4 and 5 smartphones in Western Europe.

AdMob blog notes that Android continues its strong growth in both North America and Europe. Ad requests from Android devices grew 17 percent month over month in August, following a 50 percent increase in July. Given the new devices launching in Q4, it could be a huge holiday season for the Android platform.

Traffic from the Palm Pre has also made its first appearance in the Mobile Metrics charts.
