No dividend Motorola loses USD 3.6 billion in Q4

Motorola announced crummy finalcial results on Tuesday. The company reporeted a staggering fourth-quarter loss of USD 3.6 billion. Especilla hard hit was its once-storied cell phone business.

The company recorded a string of charges to write down the cost of its cell phone business, which it trued to spun off when the economy soured. The spin-off was put on hold last fall.

The Schaumburg, Ill.-based equipment maker also suspended its dividend Tuesday and announced the departure of Chief Financial Officer Paul Liska, appointed a year ago.

One year ago the company’s loss was of USD 397 million. Revenue sank 26 percent toUSD $7.14 billion, as shipments of wireless phones fell to 19.2 million from 40.9 million one year ago.

Nearly all of the loss stemmed from a variety of onetime costs, the company said. Motorola also forecast a first-quarter loss of 10 cents to 12 cents a share, excluding onetime items. Wall Street had been forecasting a loss of 6 cents a share
