From cohabiting to marriage Navteq acquires Traffic.com

Navteq announced on November 6 that it would acquire Traffic.com. ABI Research analyst Dan Benjamin comments, that the deal is hardly shocking in the ecosystem of traffic information and other location-oriented content.

“Despite the public roles Navteq and its major mapping competitor Tele Atlas have played as ‘aggregators’ for the last several years, a line has been drawn in the sand for some time. Navteq sourced a majority of its data from Traffic.com’s systems, while Tele Atlas indexed DOT traffic sources and eventually formed a very tight partnership with aggregator and flow data provider Inrix,” Benjamin said.

He goes onto says that the Navteq acquisition only cements what has been a reality for some time: Traffic.com’s data was being sold to the navigation space alongside Navteq’s maps; the same thing is happening with Tele Atlas and Inrix.
