New car navigation device takes you Europe Nokia navigates on Microsoft platform
Nokia last week announced its first dedicated car navigator. Nokia 330 Auto Navigation device has been built on Microsoft WinCE.NET 4.2 operating system. This first time that Nokia has produced a device with Microsoft operating system.
Nokia 330 comes from Nokia Multimedia that has developed unorthodox devices before. The Nokia 770 Internet-tablet uses Linux operating system.
Nokia does not mention the Microsoft mobile operating system in the navigation system specifications. A Dutch web site Jounaw listed the operating system among other technical data. Nokia Multimedia spokesman Kari Tuutti confirmed the use of WinCE.
Tuutti played down the importance of WinCE in the navigator saying that the device is “not-connected” and its operating system has no great importance in Nokia’s overall strategy.
“In no this implies any change in Nokia’s commitment to Symbian in its mobile phones,” Tuutti said.
Knows the roads of Europe
Nokia 330 Auto Navigation is also Nokia’s first personal navigation device to include Europe-wide maps. The navigator provides seamless navigation from one European country to the next, with spoken and visual directions on the 3.5 inch color touch screen.
“Nokia 330 Auto Navigation complements the recently announced GPS and navigation solutions from Nokia. Finding your way across Europe is simple with this comprehensive navigation package, including an integrated GPS receiver and European maps,” said Razvan Olosu, vice president, Multimedia Enhancements at Nokia.
The device has an integrated GPS receiver. It contains a 2GB memory card for the preinstalled Europe-wide map data and detailed travel information. It also includes advanced entertainment features too, so you can enjoy your music player, photo viewer and video player.
The GPS chip comes from SiRF, the navigation application is Navigate 7 from Route 66. The map provider is Navteq.
The navigator is expected to available in Europe during the fourth quarter 2006 at an estimated retail price of EUR 360 without taxes.
