IDC: Over 2 million in 2003 Over 1 million Zires sold

PDA maker Palm has sold over one million units of its low-end PDA, Zire. This makes Zire the company’s fastest selling model ever. Zire was launched in October 2002. The device, equipped with 2MB of memory and a greyscale 160x160 pixel resolution screen, costs USD 99 in the U.S. Zire runs version 4.1 of the Palm operating system. According to Palm, over 90 percent of Zire buyers are first-time PDA users. The company hopes that Zire owners will later become users of its more expensive PDAs. Research firm IDC predicts that total sales of Zires will reach more than two million this year. Palm is the only maker of low-end PDAs.
