MoMo Detroit – July 16th – Bring Your Own Device

In the consumerization of IT, BYOD is a phrase that has become widely adopted to refer to employees who bring their own computing devices – such as smartphones, laptops and tablets – to the workplace for use and connectivity on the corporate network.

BYOD is making significant in-roads in the business environment with about 90% of employees already using their own technology (in at least a limited capacity) at work. In most cases, businesses simply can’t block the trend. And some believe that BYOD may help employees become more productive.

However, BYOD also presents a number of issues that need to be addressed by companies, such as:

  • Data breaches. For example: If an employee uses a smartphone to access the company network and then loses that phone, the confidential data stored on the phone could potentially be retrieved by outside parties.
  • Tracking and controlling of access to corporate and private networks.
  • Troubleshooting can also be a major problem in an environment where employees are utilizing a multitude of different technologies. Compatibility of employee hardware with organization software and applications should not be overlooked when considering BYOD.
  • Damage liability. If an employee brings their personal device to work, and it is physically damaged through no fault of their own, should the organization reimburse the employee for the full price of the device?

So how does a company handle these issues and the others that arise from this rapidly-growing trend?  Find out from experts at the next meeting of Mobile Monday Detroit at Compuware headquarters.
