Local entrepreneurs, mobile application developers, wireless mobility executives, and technology professionals filled the University of the Arts Hamilton Hall as Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic launched its 2010-2011 event season by tackling the controversial topic of the evolving mobile application ecosystem. Titled “Survival of the Fittest: Is your mobile app strategy DOA?” attendees heard a number of perspectives from mobile industry experts on the key issues facing businesses as they develop their mobile strategies.

Mobile Monday President Chuck Sacco welcomed the crowd and explained that attendees could provide feedback and submit feedback and questions in real-time using a beta version of Yorn on their mobile browser.

Issues addressed included:

  • Mobile Web vs. Mobile Apps: which will rule?
  • Is an app the right solution for everyone?
  • Are there are some cases where an app might make more sense?

The evening was keynoted by industry analyst Shiv K. Bakhshi, Ph.D. and moderated by renowned industry commentator Steve Smith. Bakhshi, Founder and CEO of Mobile Perspectives, kicked off the event’s content with a presentation titled “Mobility, Convergence & Confusion: Is there an app for that?” Bakhshi delivered a compelling presentation that helped provide the audience with industry and mobile device technology trends, discussed the convergence of devices, outlined the role of mobile platforms, analyzed evolving consumer behaviors, and discussed a few perspectives on how to decide on the best path to take for any business.

Bakhshi then gave way to the panel moderator, Steve Smith, Mobile Insider columnist for Mediapost and organizer of the OMMA Mobile shows. Following Bakhshi’s lead, Smith led a vibrant panel of industry experts who analyzed and attacked issues head-on. The panel included:

  • Kevin Griffin, Consuiltant, Chariot Solutions
  • Allen Proithis, Head of Mobile Strategy & Business Development Personal Systems Group, Hewlett Packard
  • Rana Puri, Sr. Application Development Consultant, Corporate Developer Program, Research In Motion, RIM
  • Rick O’Brien, President, Sempercon
  • Mark Spence, co-founder and General Manager, Transmogrify

A highlight of some of the questions addressed from direct audience participation included:

  • Right now the app development world appears very fragmented do you see a dominant player emerging to compete for market share and market consolidation?
  • What impact do you expect the Microsoft Windows OS will have over the next year, Also Is a Microsoft-Nokia alliance likely?
  • Is there a source of information associating mobile platforms with target app consumer demographics? For example, what platform do you target a fitness app versus a business intel app?
  • Do large enterprises have to implement a mobility platform so that legacy host apps can be extended effectively to a multi OS mobile device user community?
