The mobile apps marketplace continues to grow explosively creating a number of challenges for app creators. There are currently more than 600,000 apps in the iTunes app store and over 450,000 in the Google Play (Android Market) store.
While 75% of app downloads today are gaming/entertainment related, over 90% of digital marketers surveyed by eMarketer in 2011 said that mobile platforms would become more important as the share of smartphones and tablets increase. Brands and other marketers plan to increasingly develop and expand their mobile presence as a way to engage existing customers and acquire new ones.
All these entrants to the mobile marketplace face three significant hurdles
- How to stand out in a crowded marketplace and be discovered by users with purchase/download intent;
- How to optimize and target marketing spending to acquire new users through the fragmented landscape of mobile advertising channels;
- How to track and manage spending across both organic search and paid channels in response to competitive pressures and changing market conditions.
