Mobile Monday at CommunicAsia 2012 in Singapore

Mobile Monday is thrilled to confirm our participation again this year at the annual CommunicAsia event, June 19-22, in Singapore. With local and global delegates, including many of our MoMo members and chapter founders from across the APAC region, it’s shaping up to be another fantastic gathering of key mobile industry players. This is where deals get done, if you’re in the game you gotta be there!

We have secured a dedicated seminar hall within the trade-show venue for developer workshops and presentations, along with attached swanky MoMo Lounge space, and now in the process of building an energetic and interesting agenda. The full schedule details coming here asap, meanwhile potential partners – we had Nokia and SingTel last year – are encouraged to Contact Us and explore options.

As usual, we kick-off the 2012 confab with our legendary Mobile Monday Mixer event at Molly Malones Irish pub on Boat Quay the evening of June 18th. We look forward to see you all again real soon!

American Idol Style Pitch Challenge at Mobile Monday Boston

It may not have received the attention of “American Idol,” but this week’s Mobile Monday Boston featured a similar type of competition among local mobile app developers.

Featuring a three-person panel of venture capitalists, the Mobile Pitch Challenge gave area developers a prime opportunity to trot out their wares in public and receive constructive criticism about how to make their apps more appealing to prospective investors. Contestants presented their apps to the audience in a 90-second demonstration and then opened themselves up for questions from the VC panel, which consisted of Bain Capital managing director Jeff Glass, Apricot Capital cofounder Jennifer Lum and Matrix Partners general partner Antonio Rodriguez. After all the presentations had finished, the audience would vote on which app they liked the best, even though there was no specific prize for the contest’s winner.

The winning entry, for what it’s worth, was an app called PrescribableApps, which has been designed to send out text messages to consumers to remind them of when to take their medications and when to go to their physician for a checkup. The app also allows patients to submit self-monitoring reports that give their physicians updates on how they’re progressing with their treatments. Company CEO John Moore III said the company is looking for $500,000 to build a server base of patient data that is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

When asked by Rodriguez whether it was possible to make the entire app HIPAA-compliant for just $500,000, Moore responded that the company only needed to put HIPAA protections on the server base where patient data is stored since the company wouldn’t be sending out any specific data to the patients but would simply give them general reminders about medications and appointments.

The runner-up in the competition was a social networking app called Thumbs Up that’s centered on making watching television a more social activity, even if you’re watching TV alone. Thumbs Up founder and CEO Cass Sapir, who had previously worked as a producer for WGBH’s NOVA program, described his app as “a magic button for your television” that connects you with friends who are watching or have watched your favorite shows. Basically, you “friend” people that have similar tastes in television as you do and you get to chat along with them while the shows are going on. The app even accounts for time differences to help avoid spoilers, so if you live on the West Coast while your friend lives on the East Coast, your friend’s messages about the show won’t appear in the app until the show actually runs in your time.

Other notable apps showcased at the Mobile Pitch Challenge this year included Jaxx, a social networking site for men that helps them meet up for activities such as sports and card games; Scene Near Me, a mobile app for tourists that feeds them information on places where movies and television shows have been filmed when they visit new cities; and Mosec, a sort of “mobile secretary” that helps sales forces by automatically entering in data into CRMs as it is initially recorded. Nokia Announces Code Warrior at MoMo Silicon Valley Event

Nokia is on the hunt for Windows Phone apps.

The beleaguered phone maker today launched Code Warrior, a site where Windows Phone users and developers can propose ideas for apps and vote on them. Developers can then battle it out to create the best app for the challenge and earn the bounty that has been put on the app.

“Just because you’re a developer, does not mean you are innovative,” Chanse Arrington, head of Nokia’s developer and content marketing for North America, said at the Mobile Monday Silicon Valley event at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. “Sometimes you need an idea.”

Arrington also touched on the tentative but increasing success of Nokia’s new Lumia 900. The company is banking on strong sales for that smartphone and other Windows Phone devices to get itself back on more solid footing in the scrum with the likes of Apple and Samsung.

In the Code Warrior initiative, bounties range from points to devices to actual cash, backed by Nokia or Microsoft. How much consumers vote an idea up or down will determine the value of the bounty.

To promote Code Warrior, a 14-city “hack-athon” tour will kick off in Houston, Texas, on May 10. Fourteen hundred devices will be offered as prizes during this tour. Via CNET News

Mobile Monday Fourth Annual Mobile Africa Research Report

The 4th Mobile Africa report [.PDF] produced by MobileMonday, released at the annual Innovation Africa Digital Summit, addresses the growing strength of mobile innovation practices in Africa.

also see: 2011.pdf2010.pdf2009.pdf

Overview:

The focus of the Mobile Africa report this time is on the overall innovation ecosystem, which includes a range of stakeholders: industry, entrepreneurs, government, academia, civil society, donors and multilateral organisations. The report also addresses the crucial role of innovator networks and incubators. The material is drawn from interviews with over two dozen digital media experts as well as extensive research from news and market reports.

Sustainability of the innovation ecosystem requires the right blend of bottom up entrepreneurial energy and top-down facilitation of investment policies and infrastructure. These roles are played by global+local networks of mobile startups and professionals, such as MobileMonday. They are also augmented by industry-government-academic incubator networks such as the infoDev m:Labs.

The report identifies best practices and emerging directions for mobile innovation in Africa, and highlights the increasing profile of award winners from Africa in mobile excellence competitions in the region and globally. Overall shifts in the mobile industry are tracked in areas ranging from connectivity options and apps to operator dynamics and political impacts. The report ends with in-depth analysis of the emerging opportunities, challenges and recommendations for ensuring the growth of the mobile industry in Africa in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

The questionnaire and analysis used in this report is based on the author’s “8 Cs” framework of digital media, ie. the components of a digital ecosystem include connectivity, content, community, capacity, culture, cooperation, commerce and capital. In other words, holistic analysis of digital ecosystems should address not just connectivity devices and operator tariffs, but also localised content and services, payment options, knowledge-sharing culture, multi-stakeholder alliances, RoI models and human resource capacity in technology and socio-economic development.

This report, along with earlier annual Mobile Africa reports, will be useful and informative for innovators, incubators, policymakers, analysts and all those interested in the broader development processes and impacts of new media. The report also serves as a call to action and collaboration for other researchers interested in publishing regular insightful snapshots of mobile innovation dynamics in Africa.
